IBB 2 - Training for Disability Care Workers

Developing an integrated mentoring model to support starting a career as a disability care worker

IBB 2 is the continuation of the successful »  EU project, IBB. From 2003 to 2006, an inclusive training model was developed in order to train people with disabilities to become disability care workers. With this training model, people with disabilities for the first time ever were able to participate in a vocational training in the social sector.

The next step ought to be the successful entry into professional life. Six organisations from five countries are cooperating to implement this two-year-project. Until now, people with disabilities have not had access to the social and disability sector as a viable field of work. Therefore, the process requires adequate support systems which involve not only the people with disabilities themselves, but also their employers and the whole team. The particular challenge now is to acknowledge that roles have shifted: people with disabilities are no longer clients, but have become colleagues.

Tasks:

• Developing a mentoring model in order to pave the way for the fully trained social care worker to the open labour market

• Compiling a course concept for mentors to help them in their work with people with disabilities, employers, and colleagues; developing course material

• Creating jobs in the social and disability sectors as well as creating sustainable labour market oppportunities

• Formulating guidelines for the implementation of the mentoring model in each partner country
